Urdu you think you are?

Why study languages? This may sound like an encouraging opening line to a university prospectus, but sadly this is a question heard all too often, with emphasis put on the ‘why.’ No surprises that the Daily Mail of all newspapers also agrees.

The traveller issue: maybe we should all just move on

The proposal to evict the 400 travellers at Dale Farm in Basildon has, needless to say, caused great controversy. Opinion on the Roma people remains radically divided. Instead of looking at the question merely from a legal perspective, shouldn’t we be defending the travellers’ right to a basic home? In a democratic society that prides itself on a great standard of care, we must question why this certain minority is being left out.
