The proposal to evict the 400 travellers at Dale Farm in Basildon has, needless to say, caused great controversy. Opinion on the Roma people remains radically divided. Instead of looking at the question merely from a legal perspective, shouldn’t we be defending the travellers’ right to a basic home? In a democratic society that prides itself on a great standard of care, we must question why this certain minority is being left out.
