My time in Sheffield has been empowering and eye opening. Being Chair of LGBT+ Committee and Campaigns Officer for Welfare Committee has taught me that however scary it seems to be political, we simply are. While landlords violate our rights, mental health services face funding cuts, and the rise of the far right is seeing racism, xenophobia and LGBTphobia become concerningly accepted; we need to take a more vocal stance on welfare. We need a student’s union that is quite literally a union, standing up for vulnerable members and protecting our rights. I have 5 key objectives:

  1. Safety in Nightlife
  • Run training day for local venues to tackle sexual assault and hate crime
  • Better street lighting in student areas
  1. Happy In Your Home
  • Awareness campaign on your rights as renters
  • Lobby letting agents for more energy efficient housing to save you money and look after our planet
  1. Specific Mental Health Campaigns
  • A support campaign raising awareness and signposting for alcohol and drug dependency
  • Improve local and UHS support for students with eating disorders
  1. Fight for Liberation
  • Challenge the performative rainbow lanyard campaign – without staff training this is just irresponsible university marketing
  • Lobby for more women of colour employed at UCS as support services often fail to understand race dynamics
  1. Take A Stand
  • Fight cuts to support grants and services for disabled and working class students
  • SU Boycott of “Off The Shelf Festival” if University management continue to dismiss complaints about islamaphobic and queerphobic speakers
