Proposals and video games

Some people think that Valentine’s Day is a bit commercial, unlike all the other major holidays which have bags of integrity; even so it is the generally accepted time of year for people to exude romance. This includes nerds.

As it turns out there is more to life than video games, I know, surprising right? It seems people need more than polygon fuelled love and often want to have the real thing. This doesn’t mean that video games have to be absent from the happiest days of your life however, such as the day of a proposal or a wedding day itself.

Take for example proposing to your girlfriend through a video game, just the suggestion of this is bound to lift eyebrows. There is no doubt that there are a whole lot of nerdy girls and nerdy guys looking for love out there but have we really gotten to the point where this is a viable way of asking your partner to marry you?

Yes we have and it is the cutest, sweetest, weirdest and damn right nerdiest thing ever. Take for example this guy proposing through Super Mario:

Admittedly the location is not the most desirable, but it’s hard to remember any other criticisms after you have heard the girl say ‘Awwww, Yes!’ bless those geeks.

So that was lovely, but this next one is bound impress all. This guy hacked a game named Chrono Trigger, which his girlfriend was playing at the time, so that while she was walking around the game she would stumble across an area he made himself. This area was ‘Mount Baker’ in Washington the site of their first ever date, everything he put in there was a memory the two shared together and he even managed to slip some of her favourite song lyrics in there. Everything she stumbles upon means something and her cat even gets a part!

Again that was really lovely, he put a massive amount of work in and there seemed to be more thought and sentimental value in this than many more traditional acts; he even got her father’s blessing, classy. However despite what you may think, not all good proposals are through video games; as demonstrated by Google employee Michael Weiss-Malik. He literally showed the world his love by finding out when the Google street view van was going past him and holding up a sign of proposal for it, great for getting his question out there, while being plain confusing for people trying to get directions in that area.

It turns out nerds are pretty good at all this romance lark; although their choices may seem silly, at the same time they are being incredibly resourceful in creating something memorable and meaningful to the both of them, perhaps it is just because they were starved of any romantic attention for the first twenty years of their life, either way, I feel so so lonely.
