Live: Mika @ Academy, 18/02/2010

The queue that stretches from the Sheffield O2 Academy’s entrance to the bottom of the street testifies Mika’s success.

The audience ranges from young pre-teens, 18 to 25 years old and those over 30 which demonstrates his wide appeal.

The pre-teens might not understand the darker lyrics behind the pop gloss in Mika’s songs but they still go crazy for him, shouting his name and singing his songs in the cold whilst queuing. Once inside – in the sea of colourful and outrageous outfits – you can feel the sense of anticipation in the air.

The theatrical elements and grand scale of Mika’s show become apparent as the show begins. Frenzy ensues as dramatic opener ‘Rain’ reveals Mika giving his all in a top hat and tails. Along with his showmanship, his voice is incredible and unique. Mika is an all round actor, singer and dancer onstage, like an out-of-this-world Energizer bunny let loose on stage.

Mika is capable of converting anyone with his uplifting, well crafted tunes. You’re swept along by a mix of electro, jazz and pop sounds and mesmerized by the incredible animation, props and costumes.

The length of the gig is also ideal with most of the recent release The Boy Who Knew Too Much being played alongside all of the favourites from Life in Cartoon Motion.

At the end during ‘Lollipop’ the crowd is washed over by a sea of golden glitter, giant coloured balloons and fluorescent serpentines as the stage is invaded by fluorescent clad women with colourful gigantic dia de los muertos skull masks.

Once the final note had been played, the crowd left with cross bow smiles etched on their faces, fully satisfied with their Mika experience.
