Sheffield has an amazing music scene that goes miles beyond the Arctic Monkeys. Not that we don’t love a bit of ‘Mardy Bum’, but there’s so much more that the city’s eclectic pallet has to offer. And as many of you won’t have spent much time here we felt obliged to introduce you to some of the fantastic music on offer. Every day this Fresher’s week we’ll introduce you to one of our favourite Sheffield based bands, but we’re only going to scratch the surface so make sure you go out and experience it.
To kick things off; meet The Crookes.
Although, not strictly speaking local, the four-piece formed at the University of Sheffield (as did alumni The Long Blondes) and the adoptive children of the Steel City took their name from one of its leafy suburbs.
Since their inception in 2008 the boys have been championed by the likes of NME and BBC 6 Music, where you will hear them on a regular basis, particularly if Steve Lamacq is about.
Having played a string of festival dates this summer, including Sheffield’s very own Tramlines, The Crookes are embarking on a European tour which finishes at one of the city’s most bizarrely brilliant live venues; Queens Social Club. They’ll nalso be playing at the Student’s Union on the 29th of September with The Whip.
