News: Calvary

Due for release in 2013, Calvary is a black comedy/drama written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, best known for his brilliant black comedy The Guard and incidentally the brother of Martin McDonagh of In Bruges fame.

Calvary, like The Guard, stars the wonderful Brendan Gleeson and is once again set in Ireland. This time, Gleeson plays a good-natured priest named Father James Lavelle (why he’s named after the guy from U.N.K.L.E is anyone’s guess) who just wants to make the world a better place despite torment by his own community, as his life is threatened during a confession. The impressive cast also includes the comedic talents of Chris O’Dowd and the inimitable Dylan Moran.

Given the strength of this cast and the dark wit of The Guard, this all sounds nicely promising. The other McDonagh’s new film Seven Psychopaths is out later this year, as these brothers continue to be two of the best filmmakers currently working.
