Created with the RPG Maker XP engine, Exit Fate is a tens-of-hours-long tale of political intrigue and loose fantasy. While in minor ways it conforms to the infamous ‘RPG Maker game’ stereotype, lacking original music and with tiles and sprites usually being, however skilfully done, edits from older games. For RPG buffs, it can somewhat feel like it’s running on the Suikoden II engine. It subverts the RPG stereotype in many more ways with beautiful original artwork, intuitive custom-coded systems and an actually well-written story. A little intentionally trope-heavy at times perhaps, but Dutchman SCF’s impeccable English impresses throughout. Worth a shot for RPG fans.

‘Guardians of Paradise’ by Buster, created September 9th 2005, is a freeware action RPG for the PC in the style of Zelda. The gameplay mostly involves solving puzzles and slaying monsters, using the magic powers of the various elementals who join you in your quest to find a cure for your dying sister’s mysterious illness. Many of the puzzles are very well paced thought out and a genuine challenge despite their simplicity. The graphics are fairly primitive but this fits in well with the cheerful, light-hearted atmosphere.
