I had reservations going to see this film. Everybody had said it was too Disneyish, I believe one person said it was basically Bambi with better graphics. But who doesn’t like a bit of Disney? Especially when the graphics are this good, especially in 3D.Besides, the only part which was maybe a bit too far on the Disney side was the supremely happy ending and happy endings aren’t exactly rare.
Paraplegic ex-marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is sent to Pandora is his scientist brother’s place after he dies. The original inhabitants of Pandora, the Na’vi, are fighting against the invaders for the rights to their home which is the source of a precious material. Jake is sent in Avatar form to come to a peaceful solution but he agrees to gather information for the military unit in return for the surgery which will enable him to walk. As he gets closer to Na’vi he becomes torn as to whose side he is on.
The film is James Cameron’s first return to filmmaking since Titanic. It took ten years to complete and the evidence is clear. I urge you to see it if only for the special effects but story line is not as bad as some may claim.
You can watch a trailer for the film here and you can visit the film’s official website is here.
