Becoming Jane

Becoming Jane: The story of the author

With the creation of films such as Miss Potter and Becoming Jane, we seem to be becoming increasingly interested in the lives behind the authors rather than just the stories which they tell. Becoming Jane is inspired by the life of Jane Austen, based on the biography by Jon Spence.

However, I think the use of the word ‘inspired’ is key here. Are film makers actually trying to make an accurate documentary of these authors’ lives or are they simply dressing them up to satisfy the interest of the viewers.

The film displays the early life of Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway), and her relationship with Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy). It is certainly a gripping portrayal of their relationship including an attempted elopement but whether it is strictly accurate is another matter.

That being said if you do not have expectations of learning about Austen’s early life this is a good film. Despite criticism for casting an American actress in the position of a much loved English author I believe Anne Hathaway should be admired for her performance. The cast list also includes Julie Walters, Maggie Smith and James McAvoy all of whom play their parts well. In particular the relationship between Hathaway and McAvoy is very believable.

The film is definitely a good choice for a relaxing night in. You can see a trailer for the film here.
