A round up of the British fashion greats and faux-pas of the past year.
The top 5 fashion greats of the year are very predictable; they rarely make mistakes and have an eye to put together outfits that us mere mortals can only dream of (or dream of being able to afford).
1. Nicole Roberts
The Girls Aloud singer really began expressing her own style last year – with great results. Her cute bob and individual dainty style has allowed her entry into the esteemed fashion-pack – sitting front row at many shows during London Fashion Week.
2. Anna Friel
Currently working in the West End, Anna is seen almost every night in stunning clothes alongside her trade mark red lips. The great thing for us is that many of her fashion-picks appear to have come from the mighty… Topshop! Enabling us all to achieve the same great look.
3. Victoria Beckham
Never has there been a greater bag-envy than that of Victoria Beckham. She has a Birkin for every day of the year and David Beckham – life is just not fair. She is showcasing her own designs at the moment and they are looking mighty good. Yes, they appear to be pretty much designed for the stick-insect variety of women as many are of a body-con style but I can’t afford them anyway so there’s no need to get angry!
4. Cheryl Cole
She is annoyingly perfect – and everyone loves her which makes me not want to honour her in the top 5 but unfortunately I can’t help it. Her polished, extremely dressy style is always accompanied with 6-inch designer heels that are all amazing.
5. Emma Watson
A style-icon has definitely been born. First of all she looked amazing in the Burberry campaign and then she wowed at London fashion week in a glitzy gold dress. We might not see much of Emma this year as she has gone state-side for Uni but hopefully we will see glimpses of her very demure, British style.
And now for the best bit – the fashion losers of 2009.
1. Jordan
How does someone with such a tacky taste have the audacity to write a book telling the world how to recreate her style? Too much cleavage; too much leg; the colours are too garish… need I go on?
2. Cheryl Cole
She doesn’t make many mistakes but when she does they are catastophic. First was the hideous Alexander McQueen flowered net-curtain inspired horror that was donned on her birthday. Next came the chavvy CD and thigh high sock combination that shocked the X-factor audiences. Check with your stylist, always.
3. Lady GaGa
Sometimes so weird it’s wonderful; other times so weird it is still weird. Hit the whole face covered body suit, the Kermit the frog jacket and the all-in-one lace numbers. But to be honest, she wouldn’t look right with a boring outfit – keep them coming in 2010.
4. Peaches Geldof
Her new collection for very.co.uk does not seem to have improved the way she sometimes dresses herself. She might do well to design some gloves that can prevent her from Twittering stupid comments.
5. Madonna
Please start to dress your age in 2010. Thigh-high boots for the over-50′s are a no no. Her daughter seems to get it right though; maybe Lourdes could become Mums new stylist and help her to dress gracefully.
