Society of the fortnight – Ceilidh soc

‘Hmm,’ I thought, looking through the Give it a Go programme, ‘What on earth is a Ceilidh?’ I found out soon enough.

Panting for breath, I tried to remember whether I was meant to turn my partner with my right hand or my left.

I mused that there are very few dance events where you can go without a partner and still not have a chance to sit down all night

It didn’t matter that I barely knew what to do and kept going the wrong way, there was always someone there to push me in the right direction.

It was a crash course in folk dancing, full of turns and reels and galloping.

And you couldn’t help but tap your foot along to the live music.

By half time, as I stood gulping a pint, I wondered why I had never been to one of these before.

Despite not knowing anyone when I came in, I now had half a dozen people chatting to me and had danced with what felt like most of the people in the room.

It was such a welcoming atmosphere.

By the end of the night, as I stood at the edge of the room feeling like I was about to die of exhaustion, I realised two things.

Firstly, I was unfit, and secondly, I was definitely coming to the next ceilidh.

I am so glad I decided to investigate the strange word on my programme.

It was a lot of fun and a good way to make so many new friends. Plus, it’s great exercise.

Everyone is welcome, and the society love having new faces, so if you’re interested, visit www.ceilidhsoc.org for the date of the next event.
