Sheffield Students’ Union’s all day end of exams event, Exam Slam, will not be taking place this semester.
The decision follows a student being hospitalised after she was hit by a double decker bus on Bar One’s Christmas Day.
A spokesperson for the University of Sheffield said: “In December 2011 the University and the Students’ Union took the decision to suspend any licensed all-day events including the ‘Exam Slam’ whilst conducting its own internal review, pending a review from the licensing authority.
“Following this the Students’ Union was acknowledged by the licensing committee for its continued efforts to promote a responsible approach to alcohol and it therefore did not suggest any further licence conditions.
“The University and Students’ Union have decided that the voluntary suspension of licensed all-day events will remain.”

Oh hey, looks like West street’s profits are going to go up come end of exams and not the Union’s.
Students will always find a way to drink and party.
Ah yes, a wonderful idea. Halt all cheap drinks and all day events so that instead of drinking in a safe environment like the union, the students will get cheaper alcohol and drink themselves into oblivion at home more than they already do.
Pathetic
University covering its back as usual, making decisions that hurts students and their union at a time when they already have shown they call little about the students by banning protests and charging ballooning tuition fees. And they say universities are liberal places, yeah right
do the university really expect students to stop drinking accidents happen and are more likley to happen on west street. why dont they make a sensible suggestion like a railing outside the entrance.
The Student’s Union is comparatively expensive to drink at compared to the ridiculous deals on West Street. The Police should concentrate their efforts on the appauling antics that take place EVERY WEEKEND on West street and stop trying to pick faults with a very well run and safety conscious Union.
