Students of the University’s History Society have presented a cheque for £750 to St Luke’s Hospice on Friday after their annual Christmas charity cocktail evening.

The society’s traditional black tie event in December, held at Revolution in West One, helped to collect money through ticket sales, a raffle, and an auction on the night, with prizes such as activity days and autographed pictures.

HSTSOC president Liz Braithwaite said: “Many students feel the need to give back to the community after we’ve lived here while studying for our degree. It’s just really nice that we could help out such a worthy cause.”

Celebrating its 40th year, St Luke’s helps around 5,000 people in the area every year by caring for patients over the age of 18 with incurable illnesses. The Hospice relies on the community for over 75% of its funding to be able to provide free treatment.

St Luke’s fund-raising boss Fran Morley received the cheque on Friday. She said: “We need to raise about £4 million a year just to keep on doing what we do. We’re very lucky to have such a generous community, and this money raised by the History Society will help towards our target.”

The Hospice will receive further support from the University of Sheffield at several high-profile events on 25th March: the Sheffield Varsity 10km run, and the Student Comedy Festival.

History Society members will be visiting St Luke’s in the future months to see how their money is spent, as well as raising money for other charities around the city.

Jenny Alman, a charity officer for the society, added: “Our upcoming sports social will be held in aid of the Fire and Police Museum, so we’ll all be dressing up for charity. Then we’ll be raising money with the Politics Society for the Homeless Shelter by sleeping outside for a night in our ‘Rough It’ event. The university makes it so easy to get involved with activities like this through the volunteering office and RAG, and it’s such a rewarding experience.”
