Multi-million pound upgrade for University House

Work will start on University House in July 2012

The University of Sheffield has unveiled plans for a £20m refurbishment of University House to begin in July.

Foundry and Fusion will be redeveloped, while societies will benefit from extra space in the new building. There will also be meeting rooms, dining halls and a new learning centre for students.

The university-owned building is currently home to a number of staff and student services, including admin offices for accomodation services and the International Food Court.

The university may move Union nights out to the Octagon centre, which will remain open during the refurbishment.

Staff will be relocated to offices at Edgar Allen House on Glossop Road.

Work will start after July’s graduation ceremonies have taken place and is scheduled to finish next September.

The Students’ Union reopened in September 2010 after it underwent a £5m refurbishment.

A spokesman for the university said: “At a time of increasing competition between universities, the new facility confirms the extent of the University’s commitment to the quality of both the student and staff experience and will represent a major enhancement to the centre of the University campus.”
