Student hit by bus was drunk

A student who was hit by a double-decker bus moments after leaving Bar One Christmas Day said that she “had never been so drunk”, police reports state.

The 18-year-old teenager, a first year student from Suffolk, suffered a punctured lung and serious head injuries after being struck on Glossop Road a fortnight ago. Her condition is now “serious but improving”.

South Yorkshire Police has since called for a review into Bar One’s licence to sell alcohol, which will go before the council’s licencing committee on January 5.

The police report reveals that the student had a promotional cup in her handbag marked “Legendary Christmas Event“.

The report also reveals that at midday she said via social media that she “had never been so drunk”.

The event, which started selling alcohol at 10am, has been criticised as “irresponsible” by local police, who want all cut-price drinks deals at the union to be suspended.

It also came under criticism from local health chiefs and the national press for its cut-price promotions.

Sheffield City Council may revoke the bar’s licence, suspend it for a period of time or change its conditions.

The police chief calling for the review, Superintendent Martin Hemingway, said in his report: “Of particular concern, especially in view of the social media comments of the injured party, is the starting of discounted drinks as early as 10am, with a range of different drinks being discounted throughout the day.

“This appears to encourage early drinking and the mixing of drinks. In this instance, the circumstances appear to have led to a tragic road accident but, given previous incidents at the premises, the end of the university term and potentially heavy drinking by young people over the festive period, South Yorkshire Police believe that the circumstances give rise to a significant fear of serious crime and disorder.”

Meanwhile, a University manager has thanked the police and members of the public for their support.

Greg Oldfield, the University of Sheffield’s external relations manager, told the Sheffield Star: “The family and the university have received a number of messages of support from the community and I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you. They do really mean a lot.”

“Our thoughts are with the student and her family and we hope she makes a speedy recovery.”
