With the Sports Personality of the Year Awards Ceremony taking place in Birmingham next week, can either of the Sheffield nominations possibly stop Andy Murray from claiming a record third SPOTY trophy?
Sport – Boxing
Achievements in the last year – successfully defended her Olympic Gold medal in Rio by beating Sarah Ourahmoune in the flyweight division becoming the first ever female boxer to triumph in consecutive Olympic competitions.
Chances of Winning – immense accomplishment and warming nature but won’t be fighting for the top honour
Sport – Football
Achievements in the last year – spearheaded Wales’ European Championships route to the semi-finals scoring three goals at the competition. He also won the Champions League with his club side Real Madrid as well as winning Welsh Footballer of the Year for the 6th time and 4th time in succession.
Chances of Winning – just like Wales, a strong showing throughout the year but will fall just short of the top 3
Sport – Triathlon
Achievements in the last year – defended his Olympic triathlon title this summer beating his brother Jonathan who won silver. Claimed the hearts of the nation when he helped his brother complete the final race of the of the World Triathlon Series after Jonathan struggled with exhaustion and fatigue showing the true spirit of sport.
Chances of Winning – his show of brotherly love (along with his gold medal) will earn him a podium finish.
Sport – Dressage
Achievements in the last year – won her eighth Paralympic gold medal in the process of becoming a triple Paralympic Dressage Gold medallist for the second Paralympics in a row. Claimed gold in the Freestyle test grade la, Championship test grade la and the Team Championship.
Chances of Winning – has had a great ride to get to this positon yet won’t make it over the final hurdle
Sport – Athletics and Cycling
Achievements in the last year – competed in both the T38 Paralympic sprints and C4 para-cycling GB teams at the Summer Paralympics. She won gold in the C4-5 time trial in para-cycling and gold, silver and bronze in the T38 400m, 4x100m and 100m respectively.
Chances of Winning – fantastic all round athlete at the top of her game in two disciplines but won’t come near the top in this instance
Sport – Athletics
Achievements in the last year – famously became a double Olympic Gold medallist for the second time when he sprinted to victory to secure both his 5000m and 10,000m title’s in Rio. Undefeated throughout the year in the 3000m as well as in six races in the 5000m and 10,000m and was also the fastest European in all those distances including the half marathon.
Chances of Winning – could well ‘Mobot’ himself onto the podium after another stellar summer
Sport – Cycling
Achievements in the last year – became Team GB’s joint highest Olympic Gold medal winner when he claimed three gold’s at the Rio Olympics in the Team Sprint, Individual Sprint and the Keirin to take him alongside Chris Hoy. Also won Sprint Gold at the World Championships in London before the Olympics and married fellow cyclist Laura Trott (Kenny) in September of this year.
Chances of Winning – may be just be pipped by his new wife in a sprint finish
Sport – Cycling
Achievements in the last year – the second half of Team GB’s Cycling power couple won two golds at both the Olympics and the World Championships. Her Olympic golds made her the most successful track cyclist in Olympic history and GB’s greatest ever female Olympian.
Chances of Winning – might sneak it on the line to gain a podium spot but a top 5 finish looking likely
Sport – Tennis
Achievements in the last year – finishing the year as World Number One has been the icing on the cake for a quite remarkable year for Murray. After winning Olympic Gold and Wimbledon, he finished the year by winning a career high 9 ATP Tour titles. He then saw off Novak Djokovic in the season’s final competition, the ATP World Tour finals, to win his 24th game in a row and cement his place as the best player in the world.
Chances of Winning – nailed on to become a three time SPOTY winner, is there going to be a knighthood in the New Year’s for Mr. Murray?
Sport – Swimming
Achievements in the last year – the 21 year-old swimmer won Team GB’s first gold at the Rio Olympics in the 100m breaststroke in a world record time. He also won silver in the 4x100m medley in Rio as well as winning four golds at the European Championships.
Chances of Winning – a lot of stronger competition in water’s ahead
Sport – Hockey
Achievements in the last year – Great Britain’s most capped hockey player captained her team to their first Olympic gold when they beat the Netherlands in the final.
Chances of Winning – won’t challenge but a fantastic leader in creating some Hockey history
Sport – Dressage
Achievements in the last year – the 58 year old became the oldest British Olympic Gold Medallist since 1908 when he won the Individual Jumping gold at his seventh Olympic games.
Chances of Winning – great achievement from the veteran in Rio warming the hearts of many which will earn him some extra votes
Dame Sarah Storey
Sport – Cycling
Achievements in the last year – the former swimmer won her 4th, 5th and 6th cycling gold medal to take her overall total to 14 Paralympic golds to make her Britain’s most successful Paralympian of all time. This summer she won Gold in the C5 time trial and road race as well the C5 Individual Pursuit on the track.
Chances of Winning – an unbelievable record making her a Paralympic legend and will probably deserve to come higher than she will finish.
Sport – Football
Achievements in the last year – the Sheffield-born striker has lived a true rags to riches story in 2016. His monumental year was crowned by winning the Premiership with underdogs Leicester City after eclipsing Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record by scoring in 11 consecutive Premier League games at the end of 2015. He also scored five goals for England this year including one at the summer’s European Championships.
Chances of Winning – outstanding year for the striker but his year has curtailed somewhat at the start of the new season.
Sport – Gymnastics
Achievements in the last year – the little gymnast became the first ever Britain to win an Olympic gold by coming out on to in the men’s pommel horse and floor routine in the same afternoon. He also won bronze in the All-around competition making him the most successful gymnast in British history.
Chances of Winning – deserves enormous amount of credit for his performances this year and could well twirl himself in contention for a top 5 finish.
Sport – Golf
2016 achievements – a second Sheffield representative in this year’s nomination list became the 2016 Masters champion and the second ever Englishman to win the competition. He also made his Ryder Cup debut for Team Europe in their defeat to the US in October.
Chances of winning – unlikely to be adding another award to his Green Jacket but it has been a very progressive 2016 for the golfer.
