Owls comeback sends them second

Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Yeovil Town

Sheffield Wednesday came back from behind to defeat Yeovil 2-1, in wintry conditions at Hillsborough.

The Glovers took the lead in the 40th minute through Jonathon Obika. However, a superb strike from Jermaine Johnson put the Owls back on level terms. The home team pushed hard for a winner and it finally came in the 79th minute through Reda Johnson.

The game started slowly as Yeovil defender Richard Hinds, who spent four seasons at Hillsborough, was forced off by an injury. The Owls dominated possession in the early exchanges but their final ball often let them down. The first real excitement was when Bostock was fouled 20 yards from goal after a good break from the Owls. It was the on-loan Spurs midfielder who took the resulting free kick and he shot just over the bar.

However, just a couple of minutes later the Glovers almost went ahead. After Otsemobor’s error, Parrett was free on the right of the area. He tried to cross to Yeovil striker Williams but Prutton averted the danger with a superb challenge.

The half was not going to plan for Wednesday due to resolute defending from Yeovil and their poor final ball in the final third. Jermaine Johnson did come close for Wednesday though, curling his shot just wide of the far post after cutting inside on the left flank.

However, in the 41st minute, Yeovil scored. A good counter attack led to Jonathon Obika coolly slotting past Bywater after collecting Ryan Dickson’s fine through ball in the box. Wednesday now needed a strong response in the second half after a first half performance described by Owls manager Gary Megson as not looking like ‘the Sheffield Wednesday side we’ve been used to seeing so far this season’.

However, the second half performance was as Megson put it, ‘much more like it’. Substitute Ryan Lowe almost scored within moments after coming on when he headed Reda Johnsons’ cross wide and shot straight at the keeper from inside the area. However, Wednesday were finally level in the 57th minute after a superb 30 yard strike into the top corner from Jermaine Johnson.

The Owls then put Yeovil under serious pressure and created some chances. Reda Johnson headed Bostock’s cross wide. However, Johnson did score in the 80th minute to give Wednesday a deserved lead. Johnson volleyed home the rebound after substitute Morrison’s header was saved by Walker.

The Owls are now into second place, an automatic promotion slot in League One, after Huddersfield were held at home by MK Dons.
