The Phat ‘eds, the University of Sheffield Ultimate Frisbee team, managed to secure fifth place in Division 2 at the University Mixed Indoor Nationals in Wolverhampton on the weekend of December 3/4. The result leaves them ranked 21st in the UK, and the fourth best team in the North.

The team made a great start on the Saturday, with wins in their first two games. Southampton were brushed aside 14-3 in the pool opener, a victory which was followed up with a 10-4 win over Sussex Mowhawks’ second team.
The Phat ‘eds then faced what was described as their “biggest game” of the pool against Nottingham. However they couldn’t get the result they wanted, losing 8-6.
Needing to bounce back after losing their 100 per cent record, and missing out on a chance to top the pool, they managed a narrow 6-5 win over the University of East Anglia. However, that was tempered by a 7-6 loss to Glasgow to leave them eighth overall at the end of the day.
Sunday started off with a crunch crossover game against Plymouth, with the winner securing a top eight position. The Phat ‘eds prevailed securing an 8-6 win.
They faced Aberdeen in their quarter final. Despite a valiant effort they lost the game 9-4, but a second win of the weekend against Southampton, an 8-6 win, ensured they would finish the weekend sixth overall.
The Phat ‘eds final game of the weekend was a second clash against UEA. Having beat them the previous day, a second win would result in a fifth-place finish. The Phat ‘eds got their win, with an 8-7 scoreline and improving on last year’s sixth-place finish.
“I’m really pleased with the team’s effort this semester and glad that our hard work resulted in such a crescendo at the end of the Indoor season. I am confident we can continue our success into the outdoor season – improving our seeding at tournaments and winning the Varsity point for Ultimate Frisbee,” said club captain Fearnley Evison.
The club will compete in a number of events in the new year, including the University Women’s Inddor Regionals at Ponds Forge on February 4/5. The club welcomes all spectators
