A University of Sheffield student has finished runner up in a prestigious snooker tournament, despite hardly picking up a cue in almost a year
Abhishek Raj, who represented England Universities at last year’s Home Internationals in Ireland, reached the final of the Midland Universities’ Snooker Championship in Coventry.

The competition was originally open to Midland-based universities but in recent years has expanded and now attracts competitors from all over the UK.
Raj’s lack of playing time hindered him in his opening round match, dropping the first frame in a best of three match, but managed to win the next two to avoid an early trip home. This included a break of 55 in the decisive third frame, a feat which Raj described as “a confidence booster.”
That confidence seemed to show from there on in, with Raj ploughing through the next few rounds, without dropping a single frame. This included a win over Yor’s Michael Walsh in the semi-final, who was Raj’s captain at the Home Internationals last year.
Unfortunately for Raj, he failed at the final hurdle when he lost the final 2-0 to his University of Cardiff opponent.
Raj will form be part of the Sheffield team which will travel to Great Yarmouth for the BUCS 8-ball pool Championship later this month.
