Varsity: Day 5 review

University of Sheffield 18.5-14.5 Sheffield Hallam

Sunday was Sheffield Hallam’s day at Varsity as they picked up four and a half of the six points on offer on the fifth day proper of the competition.

The day started off well for Uni as they claimed one of the week’s marquee events, winning the men’s rugby union firsts match 21-19 at the Don Valley Stadium during the afternoon. Two tries had put Uni in the lead, but Hallam went over late on and only a missed conversion prevented them from snatching a draw.

It was a largely poor night in the EIS, with the only bright spot coming from the women’s badminton team who managed to draw their tie 4-4 and half that point. Both men’s badminton teams fell to defeats, with the firsts losing 5-3 and the seconds losing 6-2.

The korfball teams couldn’t halt Hallam’s closing in of the overall gap either, as Hallam won both games. Uni’s firsts lost 11-8 after the seconds went down 8-2.
