The University of Sheffield men’s 2s wiped the floor with Sheffield Hallam University at the EIS day table tennis, winning 9 of their 17 matches consecutively to secure victory.
The comparative strength of the Uni side, who were crowned national BUCS champions earlier this month, was immediately evident from the first two matches which saw both David Man Hin Ho and James Atkins win in the first 3 games against Fenton Varady and David Carr respectively.
The second round of matches saw a slightly stronger game from Hallam, with Abdulrahman Yousef proving hard for Elliot Hogg to beat. The atmosphere was tense in the 3rd game when Hogg competed to stay in, but he secured a close win against Yousef and went on a beat him comfortably in the last game.
For the rest of the matches Hallam barely got a look in, with the Uni side comfortably beating their opponents in all of their matches. This comes as no surprise from a side who have won all of their Varsity points consecutively since 2011.
After 9 wins in a row the men’s 2s sealed the deal of another successful Varsity for the Uni table tennis team, joining the men’s 1s and women’s to earn all three varsity points.
The Uni 2s team captain, David Eckl, was delighted that the team had ‘utterly destroyed’ Hallam, whilst other Uni team members were pleased with the overall quality of the games. Tim Denby stated that there had been some ‘delicious rallies’ in the matches. It certainly was a sweet victory for the entire Uni team this year.
