University of Sheffield 36-44 Sheffield Hallam University
The Sheffield Hallam Netball W4s overcame the University of Sheffield with relative ease to set the tone for the rest of the day’s events at the English Institute of Sport.
The game started at frantic pace with Uni breaking the deadlock before Hallam came back to take a 2-1 lead within the first five minutes. Hallam then began to get into their stride, pulling ahead midway through the first quarter but had to be careful not to get complacent as their opponents were matching them in ability and effort across the court as they continued to equalise on multiple occasions. Uni were unlucky not to be drawing ahead as converting the two or three shots they had come back off the net frame would have given them the momentum. They should have really been ahead but it was Hallam who took the initiative with their clinical finishing and ended the first quarter 11-9 up with both teams looking strong.

Hallam started the second quarter well in a game that was heating up. Susannah Payne took a trip down to the floor trying to intercept the ball for Uni and two players collided high into the Hallam half in their attempts to win the ball; clearly with no intent but it showed how desperate both teams were to win. Hallam continued to run proceedings but Uni weren’t giving up yet; a two-player grab on the ball perked the black and gold fans right up who themselves wanted to out cheer their maroon flavoured rivals. This effect seemed to transfer to the court as Uni got two quick goals towards the end of the quarter. Hallam were quickly becoming the dominant team and the stats made troubled reading from a Uni perspective.
HT Score: Hallam 24-16 Uni
Uni needed an early goal to get back into the game and Bethany Pitt did what all good couriers do and delivered the goods shortly after the restart. This appeared to galvanise her team as Uni made several good interceptions to limit Hallam and another goal shortly after sparked wild cheers from their supporters to try and build some momentum. Hallam looked shaken and Uni looked a much better team however their performance in the second quarter had shifted the momentum to their rivals in maroon and Hallam continued to do what they’d been doing all game and put away their chances. Despite Uni’s best efforts to get on top of things Hallam had extended their lead to 11 points at the end of the third quarter. Hallam were looking to see game out and looked certain to take the first netball varsity point of the day. The game was being played at a much slower pace now with both teams continuing to increase their goal count. Hallam continued to move the ball well and were looking to finish Uni off which they duly did to secure a vital point for their university.
