The University of Sheffield’s Lacrosse Women’s 1s secured a memorable 14-12 win over city rivals Sheffield Hallam in a thrilling game that saw many twists and turns.
Despite beating Hallam in Varsity last year, the University of Sheffield lost both league fixtures against their arch-rivals and captain Naomi Shaw was eager for her team to avenge the two defeats in the Northern 2B league.
Shaw led by example as she got the hosts off to a blistering start, with the Sheffield captain scoring inside the opening minute. Shaw ran in front of goal unopposed, before shooting low past the Hallam goalkeeper. It wasn’t long before Uni doubled their advantage as Holly Knowles scored from close-range to give the home side a 2-0 lead after six minutes.
Izzie Hartley pulled a goal back for Hallam in the 10th minute, but Roisin Doyle, scored her first of six goals, to restore the University of Sheffield’s two-goal advantage. Goals from Sarah McBean and Abbi Best saw Hallam draw back level, but Ann-Marie Du Preez responded immediately, which saw Uni retake a 4-3 lead.
In an unbelievable turnaround, Hallam were 6-4 ahead just over a minute later after scoring three goals in very quick succession to leave the hosts shell shocked. The University of Sheffield were still in shock when Hallam scored another just before half-time; leaving the home side trailing 7-4 at the break.
The half-time break allowed the hosts to collect themselves and captain Shaw looked to inspire a positive response from her side in the second-half. Whatever she said seemed to work as Doyle pulled a goal back for University of Sheffield just after half-time. Hallam restored their three-goal advantage soon after, but goals from Knowles and Du Preez cut Hallam’s lead to just one, eight minutes into the second-half.
Two goals from Doyle gave the University of Sheffield a 9-8 lead with 15 minutes to play in another remarkable turnaround. Two minutes later, Hallam were back level, before Doyle once again found the back of net to restore the hosts’ advantage. Du Preez scored two goals in quick succession to give the University of Sheffield some breathing space with the scoreline at 12-9 with 10 minutes to play.
Hallam pulled a goal back, before Doyle scored her sixth goal of the afternoon to make it 13-10. There were a few nervous moments after Hallam scored another two goals, but Holly Knowles sealed a brilliant win for the University of Sheffield in the last minute.
The girls were clearly delighted with the result and that was reflected in their celebrations after the final whistle. The Women’s 1s have now won their last four games and they will be hoping that run continues when they travel to the University of Leeds to play their Women’s 2s in the cup next week.
The Men’s Lacrosse 1s were also in action against Hallam and they drew 6-6 at Hallam Sports Park.
Naomi Shaw, the Women’s 1s captain, told Forge Sport: “I am not sure what could be better than beating Hallam. I am very pleased as we lost against them in both games in the league last year and then we won at Varsity so we wanted to show them that it is not just at Varsity that we can win but also in the BUCS league.”
Shaw added: “This year we are really trying to work as a team; everyone with the team spirit and it really is amazing how your attitude can change a game in a couple of minutes. It was great to see.”
